Hello and Welcome! I'm Nancy Carey Johnson a woman of many hats, enormous energy and enough drive to move a small nation by myself! I’m a singer/songwriter, and though I’ve been singing my whole life (the music has ALWAYS poured out of me), I added songwriting to my resume 3 1/2 years ago. Other hats include: Teaching songwriting and Performance Technique classes, Vocal Coaching, Creative Director for Mama Bear Productions (in part a children’s music website/resource), creator of a local "Mommy and Me" music program, children’s book author, wife and mother. But of all the hats I wear, the one I've worn the longest is that of singer/entertainer.
I’m grateful beyond words to have been compared to such singers as Linda Ronstadt, Wynonna Judd, Joni Mitchell, Maura O’Connell, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Cheryl Wheeler! There is no doubt I love to sing sweet, beautiful music almost as much as I love to belt or get down to the nitty-gritty with a solid bluesy feel!!! But pretty or nitty-gritty, as long as I’m singing, it’s all good!
As an entertainer, connecting with my audience, pulling emotions from them and giving back as much or more as they've given me, brings me more joy than I can say – make them laugh, cry, love or feel empowered, for me that's what it's all about!
I am also very happy to report that where I once wore 2 feathers in my cap I now include 4. The first feather came when I was commissioned to write and record a theme for a TV pilot, the second is an Honorary mention in the American Songwriters Mag. Lyric Only Contest (May/June 2009 issue) for Ballad of Renewal. And I’ve just received notice that both the songs I entered in the Billboard 2009 Songwriting Contest (Ballad of Renewal and Note From God) received honorary mention!
Though I've been singing and performing my whole life, I took up songwriting 3 1/2 years ago. I found I had a lot to say, and apparently people were listening! After hearing a song I wrote called Annabel’s Heart, (inspired by a local girl born with a defective heart), I was commissioned to write the themes for two T.V. pilots. From there, I was asked to write a love song for a destination wedding website, which has been called “THE Wedding Song” by those who’ve heard it. Soon thereafter I received a request to write a Peace song. I delivered 3 songs one week later, which subsequently led to the position of Music Director for the Children’s Peace Project as well as teaching songwriting classes. Recently I've been invited by NYS Dept. of Tourism to submit a song for their advertising campaign!
As it turns out I'm absolutely passionate about writing songs (and luckily prolific). I’m comfortable writing in many different genres; folk, pop, rock, country, blues, children’s music, even humorous and biting songs. I write ballads, up-tempo and rollicking tunes with equal ease. Some of the songs I’ve written were written with specific people’s voices or vocal styles in mind, other songs I write as they come to me. Either way songwriting is such a joy for me!
